Pentagon Reveals 2,000 US Troops in Syria, Double Previous Numbers

Politics

The Pentagon disclosed Thursday that there are 2,000 American troops in Syria—more than twice the number previously acknowledged, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder stated that 900 troops are on long-term deployment for anti-Daesh/ISIS operations, while an additional 1,100 have been temporarily sent to address evolving mission needs.

Ryder emphasized the decision to disclose the updated figure, citing diplomatic and operational considerations. The forces consist mainly of conventional and special operations units from the US Army.

When asked how long the additional troops have been stationed in Syria, Ryder confirmed it had been "months" and stressed the deployment is temporary. The US increased strikes against Daesh/ISIS following the fall of former President Bashar Assad's regime earlier this month to prevent the group from exploiting the power vacuum.
