US Ambassador pushes back on Trump’s remarks about Israel
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee challenged remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who had said, "Without us, without the United States, Israel would not exist," by responding: "Without Israel, the United States would not exist."
According to Channel 7, a television network known for its closeness to Israeli settlers in occupied Palestinian territories, Huckabee made the remarks during a conference held in the occupied West Bank, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
Huckabee argued that his role is not only to represent the United States in Israel, but also to explain to Americans how important Israel is to their country.
Claiming that Israel and the United States share a common heritage, Huckabee challenged President Trump, saying: "If Israel had not existed, America would not exist either. We owe our very existence to what happened in this land."
Earlier, speaking after a meeting with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Trump addressed Middle East issues and stated:
"Without us, without the United States, Israel would not exist. Without me, Israel would not exist because no president was willing to do what I did. I have a great relationship with Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu), but Bibi now needs to act more responsibly regarding Lebanon."
