Needles and nails found in Halloween sweets across Germany
Nails, screws, needles and other dangerous objects have been discovered in sweets handed out to children during Halloween celebrations in several regions of Germany, authorities said on Monday, according to AFP.
A nine-year-old girl suffered an injury to her tongue after biting into a chocolate bar containing a needle at least five centimetres long. She had received the chocolate while trick-or-treating in the northern German town of Bremervörde, police in Rotenburg said, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
In Munich, in southern Germany, a nine-year-old boy who had gone trick-or-treating door to door with a group of friends on Saturday bit into a sweet containing a nail, police said. However, he spat it out before sustaining any injuries.
In Burg, on the island of Fehmarn in northern Germany, an 11-year-old girl discovered a three-centimetre sewing needle inside a chocolate bar. She had also been trick-or-treating with a friend of the same age.
In Umpferstedt, near Weimar in eastern Germany, metal staples were found inside chewing gum received by two children, aged 11 and 12, police reported.
Similar incidents have been reported across Germany. Last year, a mother discovered a razor blade among the sweets her children had collected while trick-or-treating.
Halloween, a holiday of Anglo-Saxon origin, became popular in Germany in the 1990s, largely thanks to American films, television series and costume parties.
Today, many German children dress up in costumes and go door to door asking for sweets. However, the tradition does not have historical roots in Germany.
