Michael Mann hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself
American director and screenwriter Michael Mann has been hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles shooting range.
The incident was reported by TMZ.
A source told the outlet that the 83-year-old director of Heat and Collateral was apparently trying to place his firearm back into its holster at the shooting range at around 4 p.m. on Saturday when it discharged. He was subsequently taken by ambulance to a local hospital, CE Report quotes ANSA.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the incident. Police officers and firefighters responded to The Range LA following reports of the accident.
According to authorities, Mann, who had no intention of harming himself, was injured during a training session after accidentally firing a gun at his own leg.
TMZ said it had contacted the director's agent for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.
“On Saturday, at a shooting range, a firearm accidentally discharged while in its holster, causing a superficial wound to director Michael Mann. He was treated and will be discharged,” the filmmaker's representatives said in a statement, according to Variety.
Mann is best known for directing films such as Heat, Manhunter, Collateral and The Insider.
His latest directorial project was the 2023 film Ferrari, starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari and Penelope Cruz as his wife, Laura.
Mann is currently working on Heat 2, the highly anticipated sequel to his 1995 crime drama starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
The original film, a major box-office success, depicted the intense confrontation between Los Angeles Police Department detective Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Pacino) and professional criminal Neil McCauley (De Niro).
Mann adapted the screenplay for Heat 2 from the 2022 novel of the same name, which he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner.
Described as both a sequel and a prequel to the original, the upcoming film explores the lives of the characters portrayed by Pacino and De Niro.
According to Variety, the cast is expected to include Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Adam Driver.
