Aaron Sorkin’s highly anticipated sequel to The Social Network, The Social Reckoning, has made a disappointing debut at the North American box office, earning just $6 million and finishing fifth over the weekend.

Meanwhile, the horror film Other Mommy, starring Jessica Chastain, topped the box office with $28 million despite overwhelmingly negative reviews, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Produced by Blumhouse and distributed by Universal Pictures, the film exceeded expectations even though it received just 19% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Chastain plays a supernatural entity that takes on the appearance of a young girl’s mother.

In second place was Verity, Amazon MGM’s psychological thriller based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel and starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson.

The film earned $12 million in its second weekend, marking a 64% decline from its opening performance. However, it has already grossed $113 million worldwide against a production budget of $40 million.

Another horror film, Resident Evil, secured third place.

Directed by Zach Cregger, known for Weapons, and distributed by Sony Pictures, the latest adaptation of the popular video game franchise earned an additional $8 million in its fourth weekend.

Its worldwide box office total has now reached $300 million against a reported production budget of $75 million.

Paramount’s Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt, finished fourth with $7 million in its third weekend.

The thriller follows a plane crash survivor who struggles to stay alive alongside his dog. The film has grossed $131 million worldwide.

Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, distributed by Sony, returns to the world of Facebook explored in David Fincher’s 2010 film The Social Network.

The original film earned $224 million worldwide and won Sorkin the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In the sequel, Mikey Madison portrays an engineer who provides confidential company documents to a journalist, played by Jeremy Allen White, to expose the company’s practices.

Despite the success and recognition of the original film, The Social Reckoning struggled to attract audiences during its opening weekend.
