The Emmy Awards will move from traditional television to streaming for the first time in the ceremony’s history, with Amazon Prime Video set to broadcast the event beginning in 2027, the Television Academy announced, according to DPA.

The Emmy ceremony will be available to watch globally without a subscription and will continue to take place in September, the Academy said. The agreement between Amazon and the Television Academy will run for six years, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

The partnership will ensure that “television’s most prestigious awards continue to adapt to a changing media landscape, embracing the future of premium television consumption,” according to the Academy.

The move brings an end to the longstanding model under which the Emmy Awards rotated among the four major US broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

The decision is likely to draw criticism because Amazon will not only serve as the Emmy Awards’ broadcast partner for at least six years but is also a major television producer and competitor at the ceremony.

Industry observers have long speculated that the Emmy Awards could eventually move to streaming, although it remains unclear whether the shift will help reverse declining audience figures.

First presented in 1949, the Emmy Awards are among the most prestigious honors in the US entertainment industry, recognizing television programs, actors and other industry professionals.
