Film Michael dominates global box office on opening weekend
The biographical film Michael, produced by Lionsgate, dominated the North American box office in its opening weekend, earning $97 million, according to data published Sunday by Comscore and cited by Xinhua.
The film also generated $120.4 million internationally, reaching an estimated $217.4 million worldwide by Sunday, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the movie tells the life story of Michael Jackson beyond his music, focusing both on his off-stage life and some of the most iconic moments from the early career of the artist known as the “King of Pop”, who passed away on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50.
Jaafar Jackson, a member of the Jackson family and son of Jermaine Jackson, portrays his uncle in the film.
After leading the North American box office for three consecutive weeks, the animated adventure film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, produced by Universal Pictures and Illumination, dropped to second place in its fourth weekend with $21.2 million, bringing its North American total to $386.5 million.
The top three is completed by the sci-fi film Project Hail Mary, from Amazon MGM Studios, which earned $13.2 million in its sixth weekend, reaching a domestic total of $305.4 million.
In fourth place is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, produced by Warner Bros., with $5.6 million, followed by The Drama (A24) with $2.6 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
