Ryan Gosling tops box office with Project Hail Mary
Ryan Gosling reaches for the stars.
“The Last Mission: Project Hail Mary”, starring the former Ken actor, opened in theaters across the United States and Canada with $80.6 million and is nearing $141 million globally, marking the best debut of the year, CE Report quotes ANSA.
The science fiction film directed by Oscar winners Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) is also the second-best opening ever for a non-franchise film.
It follows closely behind Oppenheimer, which debuted in the summer of 2023 with $82.4 million and went on to gross $330 million in North America and $976 million worldwide.
For Gosling, this is also the second-best opening of his career after Barbie, which debuted with $162 million. The film also marks the best opening ever for Amazon MGM Studios.
In second place remains another original title, this time animated. “Jumpers – A Leap Among Animals”, directed by Daniel Chong for Pixar (owned by Disney), continues its successful run, earning another $18 million over the weekend. The hardworking and amusing beavers in this charming environmental comedy have reached a domestic total of $120 million after three weeks in theaters.
Third place goes to “Dhurandhar: The Revenge”, an Indian action thriller starring Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and R. Madhavan, which opened with $13.5 million. It marks the best-ever debut for a Bollywood production in North America—an even more impressive feat considering its four-hour runtime and limited release.
Meanwhile, “Ready or Not 2” underperforms. The comedy-horror sequel directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, featuring the return of Samara Weaving alongside new cast members including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kathryn Newton, Shawn Hatosy, and Elijah Wood, barely surpasses $9 million—well below expectations of around $20 million.
Rounding out the top five is “Reminders of Him – The Best Part of You”. Distributed by Universal Pictures, the romantic drama starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers earned $8 million in its second weekend, bringing its total to $33 million.
