Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov has signed a consultancy agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support the decarbonisation of Bulgaria’s coal-powered Maritsa East complex, the Energy Ministry announced Thursday, CE Report quotes BTA

The agreement includes EIB advisory services to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support renewable energy development, and strengthen the Ministry’s capacity to manage EU-funded projects. The initiative aims to lower energy costs and ensure the sustainable transformation of the strategic energy site.

“The EIB’s partnership is crucial to securing Maritsa East’s green future and economic competitiveness,” said Minister Stankov. EIB Vice-President Kyriakos Kakouris reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to a just transition that leaves no community behind.

This marks a new phase in the ongoing cooperation between the Ministry and the EIB to advance Bulgaria’s decarbonisation efforts.
