Taylor Swift’s Showgirl breaks all-time first-week album record
"The Life of a Showgirl" by Taylor Swift now officially claims the highest first-week numbers ever recorded for an album, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
Billboard reported today that in its first five days of release, the album surpassed 3.5 million album-equivalent units, representing both sales and streaming consumption.
This breaks the previous record held by Adele’s "25", which debuted with 3.482 million units on the December 2015 chart — a high mark that stood for almost a decade.
Swift broke the record in just five days, meaning her total is expected to grow even further in the remaining two days of the tracking week.
The record for pure album sales, excluding streaming or other forms of consumption, still belongs to Adele, but possibly only for a short while.
Billboard reported that full album sales for The Life of a Showgirl reached 3.2 million by the end of day five, just slightly below the 3.378 million that 25 sold in its first week in 2015. For both albums, sales made up the vast majority of total units.
Some industry forecasters are now speculating whether Showgirl might even hit the wild milestone of 4 million units by the end of the tracking week.
The upcoming No. 1 chart position for The Life of a Showgirl will follow closely behind the No. 1 debut of “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl”, which grossed $33 million in theaters during a limited three-day run, with a flat $12 ticket price for all showings.
