Taylor Swift’s “Showgirl” tops global box office

After filling stadiums around the world with her record-breaking tours, Taylor Swift proves she has no rivals even on the big screen, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Her new film project, “The Official Release Party of a Showgirl”, grossed $33 million during its opening weekend in North America, plus another $13 million internationally, for a global total of $46 million.

It’s a remarkable result, considering that the title was announced just two weeks ago and promoted almost exclusively through the singer’s social media.

Distributed by AMC Theatres, the film is neither a documentary nor a concert movie like The Eras Tour (2023), which had debuted with $93.2 million, but rather an 89-minute cinematic experience giving fans an exclusive first listen to Swift’s twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, along with unseen footage and a new music video.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Una battaglia dopo l’altra” (“One Battle After Another”) holds strong in its second weekend, earning $11 million in the U.S. and Canada for a North American total of $43 million.

Worldwide, the film — which cost Warner Bros. around $130 million — has already surpassed the $100 million mark.

Meanwhile, “The Smashing Machine”, the A24 drama starring Dwayne Johnson, struggled in its debut, collecting only $6 million — the worst opening of The Rock’s career.

Directed by Benny Safdie, the film tells the story of fighter Mark Kerr and was met with great enthusiasm at the Venice Film Festival, where it received a Silver Lion for Best Direction and a 15-minute standing ovation. However, that festival buzz did not translate into box office success.

Rounding out the top five:

“Gabby’s Dollhouse” (Universal), a film adaptation of the popular Netflix children’s series, earned $4.7 million this weekend, for a two-week total exceeding $21 million.
“The Conjuring – The Final Rite” (New Line/Warner Bros) continues to perform well in its fifth week, adding another $4.2 million and bringing its North American total to $168 million.

Directed by Michael Chaves, the film confirms The Conjuring as the most profitable horror franchise in history.
