‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ debuts at #1 with $18M, dethroning horror hit Weapons
Kpop Demon Hunters, the anime film directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, debuts at number one in theaters with a gross of $18 million, CE Report quotes ANSA.
The numbers allow the three young Korean pop star protagonists of the animated feature to dethrone Weapons, the mystery-horror by Zach Cregger produced by New Line/Warner Bros. Starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and June Raphael, the story follows a group of students who mysteriously vanish. Now in its third weekend, Weapons earns $15.6 million, bringing its North American total to $115.8 million.
Despite the competition, the weekend—the first after schools reopened—remains the weakest of the summer, with total box office revenues estimated at around $78 million.
In third place is Freaky Friday: Freakier Than Ever, a Disney sequel to the beloved family classic released 22 years ago. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan return as the mother-daughter duo who switch places, this time directed by Nisha Granata. The film earns $9.2 million over the weekend, for a total of $70.5 million over three weeks in the U.S. and Canada.
Just off the podium is Marvel’s superhero family in Fantastic Four: Origins, starring Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, which brings in another $5.9 million, bringing its total to nearly $260 million in its fifth weekend.
In fifth place is Bad Guys 2, an animated feature from Universal about an unlikely band of animal thieves. In its fourth weekend, it surpasses $5 million, pushing its domestic total over $66 million.
