Donchev Begins Beethoven Cycle

On May 3, the Prof. Asen Diamandiev Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts (AMDFA) in Plovdiv will host a special recital by renowned pianist Prof. Ivan Donchev, marking the launch of his ambitious project Debut and Legacy — a complete live performance of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas over the next three years, CE Report quotes BTA

Donchev, one of only a handful of European pianists to perform the entire cycle from memory, begins with the first three sonatas in a concert trilogy set to conclude in 2025. Prior to the performance, he will offer an introductory lecture exploring Beethoven’s complex psyche and emotional depth.

“Classical music must stay relevant,” Donchev said, emphasizing the importance of interpreting not only the music but also the mind of the composer. He believes performers should act as mediators between the composer’s vision and modern audiences.

A student of the legendary Aldo Ciccolini, Donchev combines artistic rigor with personal discipline drawn from his passion for literature and martial arts. He currently teaches at AMDFA Plovdiv, continuing to inspire new generations of musicians.
