Renowned tenor Bogomil Spirov, a longtime star of Sofia’s Stefan Makedonski National Music Theatre, has died following a traffic accident, the theatre confirmed Tuesday, CE Report quotes BTA

Spirov, 57, was struck by a truck while riding his motorbike through an intersection in downtown Sofia on Monday afternoon. He was taken to Pirogov emergency hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

The truck driver, also 57, tested negative for alcohol and drugs, according to the Interior Ministry. Preliminary reports indicate the truck was traveling behind Spirov’s motorcycle at the time of the accident.

Born in Sofia in 1968, Spirov studied opera at the National Music Academy under baritone Nikola Vasilev and joined the National Music Theatre in 1993, performing lead roles in numerous operettas and musicals.
