The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed UNESCO’s unanimous decision to designate February 9 as World Greek Language Day. The move, backed by 87 member states, recognizes the Greek language’s continuous 4,000-year oral and 3,500-year written tradition, and its influence on European languages and scientific terminology, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

The designation, to be formally adopted at UNESCO’s General Conference in November 2025, is seen as a triumph of Greece's cultural diplomacy. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called it a "double source of pride," highlighting Greece’s contributions to democracy, philosophy, and science.

Political leaders, including PASOK-KINAL’s Nikos Androulakis, hailed the decision as symbolic recognition of Greek's global cultural legacy.
