Croatia links transparent rules to faster green transition

Green transition and effective market competition are not at odds, and strong competition, innovation and transparent rules can help accelerate the shift towards a sustainable economy, Mirta Kapural, president of the council of Croatia’s competition watchdog AZTN, said at the roundtable “Green Transition and Market Competition – Regulatory Challenges, Market Rules, and a Sustainable Economy,” organized by AZTN and Poslovni dnevnik.

In this context, she added, the task of the competition regulator is to ensure effective market competition, promote ecological and sustainable goals, but also prevent abuses under the guise of sustainability, CE Report quotes HINA.

When talking about the green transition, the first things that come to mind are climate policies, environmental protection, and energy. However, this topic is also connected to competition law, whose role is to make the transition to a sustainable economy efficient, innovative, and fair, without distorting market conditions or harming consumers, Kapural said.

In this way, competition rules become an important tool that allows the green transition to foster innovation and the development of new technologies, while at the same time preventing sustainability goals from being used as an excuse to restrict market competition, she noted.
