Türkiye proposes pet ban in restaurants

Türkiye's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has prepared draft legislation that would ban pets from restaurants, cafes, and other hospitality venues across the country.

According to TV100, the proposal would apply not only to indoor dining areas but also to outdoor spaces, including terraces and gardens, CE Report quotes BTA.

Businesses that fail to comply with the proposed rules would face financial penalties.

The draft legislation comes amid ongoing public debate over whether pets should be allowed in restaurants and cafes. Under the current system, individual business owners are generally free to decide whether to admit pets. The proposed law would replace this approach with a single nationwide rule applicable to all hospitality establishments.

According to official statistics, around 14 percent of Türkiye's approximately 27 million households own a cat or a dog, including about 1.42 million cats and 950,000 dogs. Pet ownership has grown significantly in recent years.
