Bulgaria Hosts Over 75,000 Ukrainian Refugees, UN Reports
Since the escalation of the Ukraine war in February 2022, Bulgaria has played a key role as an EU border state, according to a UN report published Monday, CE Report quotes BTA
Over 2.3 million Ukrainian refugees have passed through Bulgaria, with more than 204,000 receiving temporary protection. As of February 2025, around 75,250 remain in the country — a steady increase over the past three years.
In 2024, over 2,500 Ukrainian nationals acquired Bulgarian citizenship. Others transitioned to legal residence, moved elsewhere in the EU, or returned to Ukraine.
The report also notes Bulgaria’s ongoing role in hosting asylum seekers from Syria and Afghanistan. In 2024, 12,250 applied for asylum — a drop from 22,500 the year before. Since 2011, over 55,000 Syrians have sought protection in Bulgaria.
Despite integration challenges, the country remains a significant hub for regional refugee protection.
