Bulgaria Reaffirms Euro Adoption for 2026
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and Central Bank Governor Dimitar Radev have reaffirmed the country's commitment to adopting the euro as its official currency on January 1, 2026, CE Report quotes BTA
Following a meeting of the Joint Governance Council, Zhelyazkov emphasized that the signed position reflects Bulgaria’s readiness to meet eurozone entry criteria and to ensure a smooth transition that protects the public interest. The document is now open for parliamentary endorsement to bolster its credibility before EU institutions.
“This position reassures our EU partners that Bulgaria upholds the rule of law and honors its obligations,” Zhelyazkov said, citing the country's long-standing EU integration efforts.
Zhelyazkov also welcomed Parliament Speaker Nataliya Kiselova’s rejection of President Rumen Radev’s recent call for a referendum on euro adoption, describing it as a constitutional safeguard. The proposed referendum had raised concerns among pro-European circles.
The reaffirmed stance signals unified institutional backing for Bulgaria’s eurozone bid, which awaits final approval from the European Central Bank and European Commission.
