Political Tensions Rise Over Bulgaria’s 2025 Budget and Eurozone Accession

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov must resist political pressure, prevent budget manipulation, and introduce a 2025 budget with a 3% deficit, according to Continue the Change Co-chair Kiril Petkov. In a Facebook post, Petkov criticized GERB leader Boyko Borissov, questioning his authority over Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova and urging Zhelyazkov to take control, CE Report quotes BTA

Borissov responded on Sunday, calling for clarity on postponed 2024 expenditures ahead of a Joint Governance Council meeting. Meanwhile, Petkova confirmed Bulgaria's intent to request a convergence report for eurozone accession but warned against premature application due to the risk of rejection.

The Finance Ministry has requested urgent budget data to finalize the 2025 State Budget Act and assess the 2024 deficit.
