Turkish media highlight Iliana Iotova's historic election as Bulgaria's first female president
The election of Bulgaria’s first female president, Iliana Iotova, is a major focus in the headlines used by Turkish media to cover Sunday's presidential runoff in Bulgaria.
In addition, they also touch on the possibility of a shift in Europe’s policy toward Russia, CE Report quotes BTA.
“Historic Elections in Bulgaria. Woman Elected President for First Time Ever,” reads the headline on the Haberler news website. The site notes that with her result, Iotova has surpassed Andrey Gurov in the runoff. “Iliyana Iotova, who is the first woman to become president of a country following (presidential) elections, thanked all citizens as she announced her victory. Prime Minister Rumen Radev, who advocates for the development of relations with Russia and opposes military aid to Ukraine, congratulated Iotova,” the article states.
The website Haber 7 also commented on what it described as a historic victory - a woman becoming president of Bulgaria - and published her biography. “Result of Critical Election Is Clear. Iliana Iotova Declares Victory; Country Makes History,” reads the headline on the news site. The media outlet also notes that Iotova is currently serving as acting president, and that following this election, Kiril Valchev will become vice president.
The website of OdaTV analyzes the election results in Bulgaria in the context of European politics.
“Winner in Bulgaria Is Clear. Europe’s Policy toward Russia is Crumbling,” reads the outlet’s headline. The television station highlights the political changes that lie behind this outcome. “With the rise of Alternative for Germany, the political and constitutional crisis in Poland, and Sunday’s election of Iotova in Bulgaria, the policy that the European establishment is trying to pursue against Russia has begun to face opposition from the peoples of Europe,” the media outlet writes, raising the question of how much longer Europe’s overall policy against Moscow can continue.
OdaTV also notes that the election results could affect Türkiye in terms of security in the Black Sea.
“From Türkiye’s perspective, the most significant consequence is the emergence of differing security and diplomatic priorities among NATO allies in the Black Sea,” the media outlet writes.
The media highlights in its headline the significant lead with which Iotova won the election. The news agency features the statement made by Iotova and Valchev on election night and publishes the biographies of Bulgaria’s future president and vice president.
