European Commission: Serbia has opportunity to advance on EU accession path - EXCLUSIVE
The European Commission has said that Serbia has an opportunity to make progress on its path towards EU membership following the victory of the winning list, while stressing that the country must demonstrate its commitment to European integration through concrete actions.
“Serbia is a candidate country to the EU and a key partner for the EU,” a European Commission spokesperson told CE Report in an on-the-record response.
The spokesperson stressed that candidate status requires a credible commitment to EU membership, demonstrated through concrete actions.
“The Commission welcomes the ambition for democracy and rule of law from the winning list,” the spokesperson said, adding that this provides an opportunity for Serbia to advance on its accession path.
The European Commission also reaffirmed its readiness to support Serbia in implementing key reforms.
“The EU stands ready to support reforms on the rule of law, media freedom, the fight against corruption and strong democratic institutions, and to work together with Serbia’s new leaders to advance Serbia’s future in the European Union,” the spokesperson concluded.
