Bulgaria Commemorates Victims of Communist Regime on February 1

Bulgaria

On February 1, Bulgaria honors the victims of the communist regime. Kiril Petkov, Co-chair of Continue the Change, emphasized on Facebook the importance of remembering this dark chapter in history to prevent its recurrence, CE Report quotes BTA

Eighty years ago, the so-called "People's Court" sentenced hundreds to death, and on the night of February 1-2, 1945, 100 men were executed. Among those affected was Petkov’s grandmother, Rayna Petkova, who refused to become a State Security informer despite immense pressure. She was sent to forced labor camps but survived and later worked as a surgical nurse in Sofia.

Petkov paid tribute to all who suffered, particularly the parliamentarians, ministers, journalists, and officials sentenced by the People's Court. "Eternal memory to all those murdered," he concluded.
