Shmyhal coordinates emergency power repairs in Kherson

War in Ukraine

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, together with the leadership of the Kherson Regional Military Administration and energy sector representatives, held a meeting of the Crisis Management Center regarding the electricity supply situation in the region.

The deputy prime minister announced this on Telegram, CE Report quotes Ukrinform.

“We are coordinating efforts at all levels to accelerate restoration work following yet another Russian attack. We are working together with the military to protect energy infrastructure,” he said.

Meeting participants discussed additional equipment needs for urgent repairs and the creation of reserves. Shmyhal instructed that the delivery of equipment needed by energy companies be expedited.

According to the deputy prime minister, to strengthen the resilience of the Kherson region, a powerful power transformer from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has already been transferred from the Ministry of Energy’s hubs to one of the local communities. In July, the region also received a 1 MW energy storage system, which will significantly enhance the stability of the power supply.

At the request of enterprises in the Kherson region, the Energy Support Fund approved the purchase of critical equipment worth over 27 million euros. Contracts totaling 13.1 million euros have been signed. In particular, 52.8 metric tons of energy equipment and materials have been provided this year from the Ministry of Energy’s regional hubs. This includes 272 transformers, 90 generators, and other equipment.

Shmyhal expressed his gratitude to the energy workers who are operating under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions.

Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional State Administration, noted that following overnight Russian strikes on critical infrastructure facilities, the situation in Kherson’s power grid remains extremely difficult. Emergency repair work is underway, but it is currently impossible to predict when it will be completed due to the security situation and the extent of damage to the equipment.

As reported, as of the morning of August 17, power outages affecting consumers were recorded in five regions, including Kherson, due to new strikes by Russian forces.
