Russia moves to protect Yandex data centers following drone attacks
Russian Minister of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev said his ministry was working with the Defense Ministry to protect Yandex data centers following a series of drone attacks targeting the company’s infrastructure.
Speaking at a committee meeting in the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, Shadayev said Yandex had faced attacks on an unprecedented scale in recent days, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
“The Ministry of Digital Development, together with the Ministry of Defense, is addressing the issue of protecting these facilities,” he said.
Shadayev noted that Yandex’s services had continued operating despite the attacks, attributing their resilience to the company’s backup systems and its strategy of distributing infrastructure across different regions.
He added that authorities were monitoring the scale of the attacks in real time and that companies across the technology sector were helping Yandex address the resulting challenges.
Yandex previously reported that its data centers had been damaged in drone attacks in Sasovo, in the Ryazan region, on October 8; Kaluga on October 9; and the Vladimir region on October 11.
According to the company, operations at its Sasovo and Vladimir data centers were completely suspended, while part of the infrastructure at its Kaluga facility was rendered unusable.
Yandex, often described as “Russia’s Google,” has experienced service disruptions as a result of the attacks.
Russian authorities are continuing efforts to strengthen the protection of the company’s critical digital infrastructure.
