OpenAI unveils preview plan for next AI models
OpenAI announced that, at the request of the U.S. government, it will begin a limited preview of three new artificial intelligence models with a "small group of trusted partners" before making them available to the general public in the coming weeks.
In a statement, OpenAI said the GPT-5.6 family of AI models will initially be released through a restricted preview program, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
The company said the flagship model in the new series is Sol, while Terra is designed as a balanced model for everyday use and Luna is optimized for speed and cost efficiency.
According to the statement, the Sol model will launch with OpenAI's strongest security infrastructure to date, featuring enhanced safeguards against higher-risk activities, sensitive cybersecurity requests and repeated misuse.
OpenAI said all three models are expected to become generally available in the coming weeks.
"As part of our ongoing engagement with the U.S. government, we shared our plans and the models' capabilities before today's announcement. At their request, we are launching a limited preview with a small group of trusted partners, whose participation is also shared with the government, before making the models more broadly available," the company said.
OpenAI added that testing will continue throughout the preview period while it works closely with its partners in preparation for a wider rollout.
The company also stressed that this type of government access process should not become standard practice in the long term, arguing that it could restrict access to the best AI tools for users, developers, businesses, cyber defenders and global partners who need them.
