Google launches AI studio for app creation
Google is aiming to make it easier to turn ideas into fully developed smartphone apps.
On the first day of Google I/O 2026, the company’s annual developer conference, the American tech giant launched the experimental version of the Google AI Studio app on the Google Play Store, CE Report quotes ANSA.
The app is the mobile version of a web tool that has been available for several months. It uses artificial intelligence to generate applications based on users’ text instructions. In this way, the company is bringing software creation closer to non-expert users, aligning with the so-called “vibe coding” trend.
The term “vibe coding” was coined in February 2025 by Andrej Karpathy, former Tesla AI director, to describe an approach where developers rely on intuition and conversation with AI rather than writing every line of code manually.
“Once upon a time,” a Google note states, “developing an Android app required high-performance computers and deep technical knowledge. Now, with AI Studio, you can go from a text prompt to a fully native app in just minutes.”
Currently, Google AI Studio is in pre-registration as it prepares for a wider rollout. However, Google clarified that the platform is not designed to allow uncontrolled app publishing.
A Google spokesperson, Mia Carter, told The Verge that “the quality of applications remains a top priority for Google Play” and that standard review processes will not be changed.
