Montenegro-Serbia tensions escalate as Spajić responds to Vučić

Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, responding to increasingly frequent claims by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić that the government in Podgorica is pursuing an anti-Serb policy, said Montenegro wants good-neighborly relations with Serbia as well as a clear European policy that “Vučić does not want to understand.”

Spajić added that it was inappropriate for Vučić, given his position, to act as “Russia’s PR” while lecturing others about principles, CE Report quotes FENA.

“So, one simple question for President Vučić: how is it that Serbia, according to available data, is one of the significant sources of weapons and ammunition for Ukraine, while sending one message to Moscow and another to Europe?” Spajić wrote on X.

He also stressed that Montenegro has no problem taking a clear position, but rather with what he described as the application of double standards.

Earlier on Tuesday, Vučić said Podgorica was pursuing a policy aimed at “re-educating” the 33% of Serbs living in Montenegro so that they would no longer identify as Serbs in future censuses. He also claimed that Podgorica wanted relations with Serbia to deteriorate as much as possible.

“You don't even have to look at their institutional actions toward Serbia, which are appalling. It is enough to look at their media landscape to understand that Serbia has been the target of the most brutal campaign for six or seven days. In our country, Montenegro is occasionally mentioned in passing, while in their country, 90% of the time everything is against Serbia,” Vučić said.

Vučić stepped up his criticism of Montenegro around ten days ago after the country announced that it would send a diplomatic representative to Knin for commemorations marking the anniversary of Operation Storm.

“Official Montenegro is taking part in the celebration of ‘Storm,’ while it sent no one to the commemoration of the Serbs killed in Mrkonjić Grad. Thank you to the Government of Montenegro. This is not the end, but only the beginning of such decisions,” the Serbian president said at the time.
