UK may consider social media ban for under-16s
Keir Starmer’s government is opening the door to the possibility of considering a complete ban on social media for children under 16 in the United Kingdom, following a recent announcement in Australia — the first country in the world to implement such a measure — by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor Party, similar to the British one, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
So far, the possibility of a full ban had been ruled out by Starmer, who had previously declared himself “personally against” such a draconian measure. But the idea was revived recently by Minister Lisa Nandy, who holds the Culture and Media portfolio in his government.
As reported by CE Report, in an interview with LBC radio, she left open the possibility of immediate action, stating that she had ordered a full review of the Australian model in light of growing concerns over youth addiction to social media and so-called “predatory algorithms.”
