Google removes Russia's VK and MAX messaging app from Google Play

U.S. technology company Google has removed the Russian social media platform VK and the national messaging application MAX from the Google Play Store.

In a statement, VK said its applications are no longer available on Google Play. However, it noted that users who have already installed the apps can continue using them without restrictions, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

The company added that both VK and MAX remain available for download through RuStore, Huawei AppGallery, Samsung Galaxy Store, Xiaomi GetApps, and other Android app marketplaces.

Apple previously removed VK and several related applications from the App Store. Meanwhile, Russia has imposed various restrictions on access to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X.

Russia has also blocked WhatsApp and Telegram, citing security concerns and efforts to combat fraud. The domestically developed MAX messaging app, launched last year with VK's support, has since been widely adopted, particularly by government agencies and public institutions.
