Scientists in Argentina have discovered an ancient egg believed to be more than 70 million years old, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

The perfectly preserved prehistoric relic was found in Río Negro, near General Roca, in the Patagonian region.

The discovery was made by a research team from the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences during the scientific mission “Cretaceous Expedition I,” led by the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET).

Researchers believe the egg belonged to the Bonapartenykus, a genus of carnivorous, long-legged, bipedal dinosaurs. This species once lived in the Río Negro Province during the late Cretaceous period.

Scientists also uncovered remains of other reptiles and ancient mammals near the site, supporting the theory that the area may have served as a nesting ground in prehistoric times.

If embryonic material is found inside the egg, researchers say it could mark a major breakthrough in paleontology. Once laboratory testing is complete, the egg will be displayed in a local museum in Patagonia.
