Former Tottenham Hotspur and England national team striker Martin Chivers has died at the age of 80, the Premier League club announced.

Chivers scored 174 goals in 367 matches for Spurs between 1968 and 1976, helping them win the League Cup twice and the UEFA Cup once, CE Report quotes BTA.

He was Tottenham’s top European goalscorer with 22 goals until Jermain Defoe surpassed his record in 2013.

As reported by CE Report, when Chivers joined Tottenham from Southampton in 1968, he became the most expensive player in the country with a transfer fee of £125,000. He earned 24 caps for England, scoring 13 goals. Spurs players wore black armbands during the match against Bournemouth.

“He was like a Rolls-Royce, so smooth in his movement, excellent in the air and with a fantastic finishing touch,” wrote his former Tottenham teammate Steve Archibald.
