Romania Declares August 7 National Mourning for Ion Iliescu
Romania’s government has declared August 7 a national day of mourning to honor former President Ion Iliescu, who passed away recently. The decision was made during an extraordinary government meeting on Tuesday evening, CE Report quotes AGERPRES
On this day, flags will be flown at half-mast at all public institutions, political parties, educational and cultural establishments, and diplomatic missions. Media and cultural institutions are also expected to adjust their programming to reflect the solemnity of the occasion.
However, the Save Romania Union (USR) opposed the declaration. Party leader Dominic Fritz stated that USR will not attend the funeral, citing respect for the victims of the 1989 Revolution and subsequent violent events.
Ion Iliescu, a key figure in Romania’s post-communist transition, served as president for three terms and oversaw major democratic and constitutional reforms in the country.
