Moldova eyes next steps toward EU membership after Cluster 6 milestone
Moldova's authorities must focus all their efforts on opening the remaining accession negotiation chapters and signing the Treaty of Accession to the European Union, Prime Minister-designate Vasile Tofan said after the Republic of Moldova officially opened negotiations on Cluster 6, "External Relations," in Brussels.
Tofan noted that in just four years, Moldova has managed to submit its application for EU membership, obtain candidate country status, host a European Political Community Summit, secure the EU Growth Plan, and participate in three Moldova–European Union Intergovernmental Conferences, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.
These achievements were further strengthened by the opening of negotiations on Cluster 6, covering External Trade Policy and Foreign, Security and Defence Policy, following the launch of negotiations on Cluster 1, "Fundamentals," in June.
According to Vasile Tofan, these accomplishments are the result of the extraordinary efforts made by Moldova's governments over recent years, its public institutions, and the determination of its citizens to keep the country on its European path.
"Our obligation is to concentrate all our efforts on opening the remaining negotiation chapters and signing the Treaty of Accession. We have no right to fail," Tofan said.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Republic of Moldova and the European Union officially opened accession negotiations on Cluster 6 – "External Relations" during the third Moldova–EU Intergovernmental Conference held in Brussels.
The opening of Cluster 6 comes just one month after the launch of negotiations on Cluster 1 – "Fundamentals," marking another important milestone in Moldova's accession process and confirming the progress of negotiations based on the country's reforms, sustained progress, and mutual trust.
Cluster 6 covers key policy areas including the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy, Security and Defence Policy, and the Common Commercial Policy.
