Hungary expels 10 Russian diplomats

Hungary has expelled 10 Russian diplomats who “were involved in activities in Hungary that are unacceptable for diplomats under the Vienna Convention,” Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban said in a press statement issued on Tuesday, Reuters reported, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

“This decision protects Hungary’s security and sovereignty. It does not entail the severing of diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue based on mutual respect and respect for the rules,” the statement added.

The announcement comes after Budapest’s new government declared Russia a “threat” to Hungary, Europe and the global order at the end of August, marking a break with Hungary’s Russia-friendly foreign policy under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The classification appeared in a document outlining guidelines for the Hungarian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in September. The document was signed by Orban’s successor, Peter Magyar.
