Serbia diverges from EU stance on Ukraine, Russia, cyberattacks

Politics

Serbia is the only EU candidate country from the Western Balkans that has not aligned itself with three new foreign policy decisions of the EU related to Ukraine, Russia, and cyberattacks against the EU and its member states.

As stated by the EU, Serbia did not align with Decision (CFSP) 2026/696 of March 14 on restrictive measures concerning actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine, CE Report quotes FENA.

Serbia also did not align with Decision (CFSP) 646 of March 16 on restrictive measures due to destabilizing activities by Russia, nor with Decision (CFSP) 588 of March 16 on restrictive measures concerning cyberattacks against the EU and its member states.

All other Western Balkan EU candidate countries—North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina—have aligned themselves with these three new Council decisions and will ensure that their national policies comply with them.

The EU takes note of and welcomes this commitment, the statement said.
