Poland extends 400 km border ban with Belarus

Politics

Poland has extended the restricted zone along its eastern border with Belarus, which stretches for 400 kilometers, for three months until March 5 of next year, the Polish Ministry of the Interior announced.

The ministry cited the “ongoing risk from migration pressure from Belarus” as the reason, CE Report quotes ATA.

Poland and the European Union accuse Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants from crisis regions toward the border to put pressure on Poland and the EU.

Many of these migrants aim to continue traveling from Poland to Germany and other EU countries.

In the summer of 2022, Poland strengthened the border with a 5.5-meter-high fence and electronic sensors, but this has not stopped attempts by migrants to cross the EU’s external border.

Since the beginning of September, the Ministry of the Interior has recorded more than 4,600 illegal crossing attempts.

The exclusion zone was established in June 2024 to curb irregular migration and improve conditions for border guards, police, and the military.

It has a depth of 200 meters, but in some areas extends up to four kilometers.
