Erdogan Urges Stronger Ties with Northern Cyprus
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday called for enhanced diplomatic, political, and economic relations with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), marking the 51st anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
Speaking at a ceremony in Lefkosa, Erdogan said, “Decades of injustice against Turkish Cypriots must end,” and emphasized Türkiye’s continued support for a two-state solution on the divided island. “It’s time for the international community to recognize the realities on Cyprus,” he added.
Highlighting the TRNC’s development, Erdogan pointed to progress in tourism, employment, and investment, calling the region a “shining star of the Eastern Mediterranean.”
He reaffirmed Türkiye’s alignment with TRNC President Ersin Tatar in shaping the region’s future.
The island remains divided since 1974, when Türkiye intervened following a Greek-backed coup. Despite numerous UN-led peace efforts, a lasting settlement has yet to be reached.
