Greek PM Mitsotakis Bids Farewell to Outgoing President Sakellaropoulou

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Katerina Sakellaropoulou held their final official meeting at the presidential mansion on Monday, marking the end of her five-year tenure as Greece’s first female president. Mitsotakis thanked her for her contributions, highlighting the unique imprint she left on the office, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

Sakellaropoulou emphasized the importance of political consensus and institutional communication, stressing that understanding in politics is now more crucial than ever. Mitsotakis noted that her successor would assume office amid significant geopolitical challenges and underscored the need for unity, trust, and institutional reforms, including revisions to ministerial accountability laws.

The prime minister also addressed recent developments at the European Council, praising initiatives for a common EU defense. On Syria, he reaffirmed Greece’s concerns over the new regime and its commitment to protecting minorities, particularly Christians.

Sakellaropoulou concluded by expressing gratitude for the trust placed in her and reiterated the importance of constitutional revisions, accountability, and European unity. She also called for immediate peace in Syria.

Her departure marks the end of an era, as Greece prepares to welcome a new president in a time of both domestic and international challenges.
