EU Warns of Tariff Response
STRASBOURG – The European Union has expressed strong concerns over the United States' recent tariff policy, despite Washington’s 90-day suspension of new ‘reciprocal’ tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump in early April. The tariffs target goods from trade-deficit countries, including EU member states, CE Report quotes PAP
Speaking at the European Parliament, MEP Szlapka called the US tariffs unjustified, warning that they raise import costs, disrupt supply chains, and fuel inflation. While the EU welcomed the temporary suspension, he emphasized ongoing concern over economic uncertainty and the potential for future duties.
“We support strengthening domestic industry, but tariffs are not the right tool,” Szlapka said, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to dialogue but warning that the bloc is prepared to defend its interests.
If negotiations fail, the EU may pursue further countermeasures, including a complaint to the World Trade Organization.
