Shakira fever grips Rio ahead of massive free concert

Shakira fever has taken over Rio de Janeiro as around 50 fans rehearse the choreography of “Waka Waka” on Copacabana Beach ahead of the Colombian star’s massive free concert on Saturday, AFP reports, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

“The city breathes Shakira,” said Levi Tavares, a Brazilian fan for over eight years.

Guided by dancer Christian Bazano, locals and tourists in beachwear practiced under the sun, trying to replicate the singer’s iconic belly dance moves. Behind them stands a huge 1,345-square-meter stage, where Shakira—staying at the famous Copacabana Palace—will perform from 9:45 p.m. to midnight.

Organizers expect over 2 million spectators, following similar mega-events:

Lady Gaga drew 2.1 million people last year
Madonna attracted 1.6 million in 2024

The concert highlights a major Latin American star in Brazil—a country historically focused on its own music scene. In 2024, Brazilian genres accounted for 84% of Spotify’s Top 50 in the country.

However, Brazil is gradually opening up to Latin music, and Shakira—who speaks Portuguese and has collaborated with Anitta—is seen as a pioneer in this shift.

Fans are deeply devoted:

A 70-year-old fan proudly wore an outfit inspired by Shakira’s stage costumes
Another fan shared she had followed the singer for 17 years, traveled to concerts, and even got a tattoo

Together, they spent around 4,000 reais (€700) on merchandise and accommodation.

For the city, the event is also big business. Authorities estimate:

2.1 million foreign tourists in 2025 (record)
Up to 800 million reais (€136 million) in economic impact from this concert

“Here in Rio, partying is serious business,” said Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

Still, not everyone is satisfied. Some local vendors reported slow sales, despite the growing buzz.

Meanwhile, travel bookings have surged by over 80% compared to the same period in 2024, with visitors mainly coming from Argentina, the U.S., Uruguay, Chile, and Colombia.

According to the president of Shakira’s Brazilian fan club, the success of the concert is guaranteed:

“She creates a connection between Brazil and the rest of Latin America.”
