ECHR Reports Sharp Decline in Cases Against Moldova

Moldova

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has recorded a significant drop in applications against Moldova—the lowest in a decade. In 2024, only 363 cases were registered, according to an analysis by the Legal Resources Centre of Moldova (CRJM), CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

The number of rulings issued by the ECHR against Moldova also decreased, marking a six-year low. Moldova now ranks 20th among 46 Council of Europe member states in applications per capita, though its citizens still file complaints three times more often than the European average.

Despite this progress, Moldova was ordered to pay nearly €23 million in compensation by the end of 2024. Key rulings addressed issues such as flawed investigations into maltreatment and domestic violence, lack of effective legal remedies, and discrimination based on gender and disability.

Overall, the ECHR received 28,800 applications in 2024—the lowest in ten years. Since joining the European Convention on Human Rights 27 years ago, Moldova has been the subject of 616 rulings, ranking 11th among Council of Europe states.
