The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), Anca Dragu, paid an official visit to Brussels, where she held talks with Didier Millerot, Director within the Directorate-General for Financial Stability at the European Commission (DG FISMA).

The meeting marked an important step in Chișinău’s efforts to integrate its domestic banking system into the European Union’s single financial market, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

The main topic of discussion was obtaining international recognition of the equivalence of Moldova’s prudential banking framework with that of the European Union. This certification is considered a key pillar of the country’s European path, significantly increasing the credibility of the financial sector and facilitating foreign investment.

Governor Anca Dragu emphasized that aligning national legislation with EU standards is an absolute priority for the institution she leads.

“Aligning the national regulatory framework with EU standards and obtaining EU recognition of the equivalence of the prudential banking framework are priorities for the BNM in the context of accession. The progress achieved reflects our institutional capacity to implement complex European standards,” said the head of the BNM.

European officials noted the resilience of Moldova’s banking sector and the effectiveness of the BNM’s monetary policy, which has managed to ensure price stability despite a volatile macroeconomic environment. Discussions also focused on modernizing payment infrastructure and implementing innovative digital solutions to make financial services more accessible and efficient for citizens.

Another important topic was alignment with EU standards in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing, a crucial element for the integrity of the financial system. The recent approval by the government on April 8, 2026, of the Sustainable Finance Taxonomy was also welcomed. The document, developed with significant input from the BNM, aligns Moldova with the EU’s green requirements.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the “Institution Building Days 2026” event, a platform bringing together public institution leaders and European experts to strengthen cooperation and administrative capacity in partner countries.
