Italian film to tell story behind Margherita pizza birth

Italy

From the story of a queen to the birth of an internationally recognised icon of Italian cuisine.

Ahora! Film is developing Margherita and The Pizza, a new cinematic project directed by Marco Pollini, who also co-wrote the screenplay with the support of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (True Neapolitan Pizza Association), CE Report quotes ANSA.

The film aims to bring to the big screen a story that combines history, emotions and culinary culture, recreating the historical and human context behind the origins of the legendary Margherita pizza.

Filming is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 and will take place in Naples and Piedmont, two regions that will help recreate the atmosphere and settings of the story.

“I have always been passionate about historical figures,” Pollini explained. “While reading several books about Queen Margherita, I discovered a unique and extraordinary personality: a woman with vision, close to ordinary people and the most vulnerable, who could in some ways be described as a true 19th-century influencer. The idea of bringing her story to the cinema also came about through conversations with some foreign friends who are passionate about pizza. They asked me how Margherita pizza came into existence. When I told them the story of the queen, they pointed out how little-known it was and how much it deserved to be told on the big screen.”

The involvement of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana is a key element in the development of the project, thanks to the contribution of an organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting Neapolitan pizza culture around the world.

“We are proud to support the production of this film,” said the association's president, Antonio Pace. “Margherita pizza is not only an absolute masterpiece of our culinary tradition but also a symbol of Neapolitan identity and culture. Collaborating on the film's development allows us to safeguard its historical authenticity and convey the values that our association has defended for the past 40 years.”
