Greece issues updated list of West Nile virus-affected municipalities

Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY) has published an updated list of municipalities where West Nile virus cases have been recorded up to July 27, 2026, noting that the majority of cases have been identified in Attica, while infections have also been reported in several municipalities in the Thessaly region.

At the same time, the organization has identified high-risk areas where locally acquired cases are considered likely to emerge in the coming period, along with additional measures being implemented to protect public health and ensure blood safety, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.

Based on the implementation of targeted measures, areas are classified as either “ affected” or “ high-risk” as follows:

“ Affected” areas: Municipalities or municipal communities where at least one human case of West Nile virus (WNV) infection has recently been recorded during the current 2026 transmission season.

“ High-risk” areas: Municipalities or municipal communities where no human case has been recorded so far during the 2026 transmission season, but where risk factors for imminent human transmission are present, including proximity to affected areas, geographical characteristics, current and historical epidemiological data, and available surveillance data on virus circulation among mosquitoes and animals in the wider area.
