Grammy-winning singer passes away
Celebrated American jazz singer Cassandra Wilson, a Grammy Award winner, died at the age of 70 in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, her agent said in a statement cited by AFP.
“Cassandra Wilson passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, close friends and her manager,” Robert Torre said in a statement to the press, paying tribute to a “legendary jazz artist.”
The cause of death was not disclosed, and the agent asked that the family’s privacy be respected, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
A singer, songwriter and producer, Cassandra Wilson was known worldwide for her distinctive, deep and expressive contralto voice.
During her approximately 30-year career, which included collaborations with artists such as Steve Coleman and Wynton Marsalis, Wilson received two Grammy Awards.
In 1997, she won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for the song “New Moon Daughter.”
Twelve years later, she received the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for “Loverly.”
