Greece's music icon brings Laiko Belcanto to Half Note Jazz Club
A magical musical dive into the wonderful world of bel canto is promised by Korina Legaki, who will take the stage of Half Note Jazz Club with Laiko Belcanto on Saturday, March 14, accompanied by a group of outstanding musicians.
Famous Greek folk songs, and more, will be presented in a refreshing and unconventional approach that uniquely highlights this musical genre, creating a program that is expected to be both loved and widely discussed, according to the production notes, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.
The same note explains that bel canto is both a style of singing and a method of musical composition. It emphasizes expression, emotion, the beauty of interpretation, and melody. Its origins lie in opera, operetta, and variations and adaptations of theatrical music, as they were established in live performances in café-chantant and café-aman venues in the early 20th century.
A common feature of songs around the world with bel canto influences is the emphasis on the “grand” melody and expressive, theatrical performance elements, along with lyrics that tell stories of romantic passion and emotional intensity.
The influence of bel canto on Greek folk music has been strong and decisive in all its forms — from the Smyrna style to the folk songs of the 1950s and 1960s, which produced dozens of masterpieces in composition, lyrics, and performance.
Most — if not all — Greek creators of folk songs, including Vassilis Tsitsanis, Apostolos Kaldaras, Giorgos Zampetas, Manolis Chiotis and Stratos Pagioumtzis Panou, left remarkable and deeply creative works reflecting the bel canto style and approach.
The influence of bel canto — either direct or indirect through the works of folk composers — also reached the creations of the great figures of Greek music such as Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis, Stavros Xarchakos, Giannis Spanos, Mimis Plessas and Christos Kouloumtzis.
Korina Legaki, together with a group of exceptional musicians, will perform songs from the dazzling world of bel canto in her own distinctive style. The repertoire includes songs by great Greek composers and songwriters, works by international artists, as well as traditional Greek and international pieces, such as “Acharisti,” “A Star Is Falling,” “Take My Footsteps,” “I Came Again Tonight to Your Doorstep,” “You Resemble the Sea,” “I Gave You Rosewater,” and “The Trains That Left.”
The Laiko Belcanto song cycle is a production of OCTAVA.
