Moldovan Prime Minister Requests 60-Day State of Emergency Amid Energy Concerns

Prime Minister Dorin Recean and his cabinet appeared before parliament this evening to propose a 60-day state of emergency starting on December 16. The move aims to address imminent risks related to the potential cessation of natural gas supplies to the Transnistrian region by Russia and Gazprom, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Recean emphasized that the right bank of the Dniester River has secured sufficient natural gas for the winter and faces no risks of losing heating. However, the left bank, including Transnistria, remains reliant on a single source of gas. “Let there be no illusions that Russia is protecting the people of Transnistria. It holds them hostage to its interests, seeking to destabilize Moldova and the region,” the prime minister stated.

Addressing residents on the left bank, Recean pledged assistance but stressed that energy resources must be paid for. He criticized the notion of "free gas" as a deceptive strategy. “We will help, but we will not discriminate against the citizens of the right bank,” he affirmed.

Recean called for this winter to mark the end of Moldova’s vulnerability to Kremlin energy influence. “This must be the last winter where we can be threatened in the energy sector,” he said, noting progress such as the Chisinau-Vulcanesti high-tension power line. “Energy independence requires time, effort, and investment, but we can no longer afford to be left without power or heating in winter.”

The prime minister also presented a list of laws that would require temporary suspension under the proposed emergency state. He warned Russian influence agents, including some in parliament, that destabilization plans for Moldova would fail. Recean assured lawmakers of the government’s commitment to transparency and parliamentary oversight during the emergency period.
