The historic Zagreb Funicular in Croatia, dating back to 1890, resumed operations following a renovation lasting more than a year and costing €9.1 million.

At the reopening ceremony and inaugural post-renovation ride, Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said the project marked the first comprehensive overhaul of the funicular in more than half a century, CE Report quotes HINA.

The renovation was co-financed by the European Union with €5 million, while the remaining €4.1 million was provided from the city budget.

The ceremony and first ride after the renovation were also attended by EU Funds Minister Nataša Mikuš Žigman who expressed satisfaction that available EU funding had been used for the revitalisation of one of Zagreb’s cultural and tourism landmarks.

“After 135 years, the need emerged for the modernisation and revitalisation of the Zagreb funicular,” she said, adding that the renovation had improved safety, reduced maintenance costs and increased sustainability.
