Oscar-winning actress passes away
Vera Alentova, the star of the Soviet film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears”, which won an Academy Award, has passed away at the age of 83, the Pushkin Theatre announced on Thursday, according to the EFE news agency.
“Our pain is boundless,” the statement said, noting that actress Vera Alentova had worked at the Moscow theatre for the past 60 years, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
Alentova appeared in numerous feature films, but her most important and career-defining role was in “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears”, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1981. It was the third Soviet film to receive this honor.
Born in 1942, the actress made her film debut in 1965 with “Flying Days” and went on to appear in around 30 films during her career.
In the final years of her life, she focused on acting in television series, published an autobiography, and taught acting classes.
As reported by CE Report, four years ago, she suffered a devastating loss with the death of her husband, Vladimir Menshov, the director of “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears”, who died from coronavirus-related complications.
